Being able to provide a quick and accurate pollutant map from readings at isolated measurement stations is becoming more important today in light of the European norms on air quality and the public's demand to be informed. Commonly used algorithms, like spline or inverse distance based techniques, are quick but their accuracy remains to be determined for two reasons. Firstly, the choice of method is arbitrary. The method retained will be the one that produces the most satisfactory result according to the user's subjective perception. Secondly, none of these methods can take relevant auxiliary information (like meteorological data, traffic density or industrial emissions) into account, thus limiting the realism of the final map. The geostatistical mapping algorithm, called kriging, provides an answer to both these problems. This algorithm is based on the specific spatial behaviour of the mapped pollutant via a spatial correlation function calculated from the sample measurements. Because the form of this correlation function determines the shape of the final map, the geostatistical algorithm adapts itself directly to the spatial characteristics of the data, thus eliminating the need for a subjective evaluation. Doubly important, auxiliary information can also be incorporated in the final map by integrating any relationship (linear or non-linear) with the mapped pollutant into the kriging algorithm. The paper begins with a presentation of the concepts behind the geostatistical mapping algorithm. Two practical applications, mapping nitrogen dioxide over Rouen and benzene over Paris, are used to highlight the capacity of the geostatistical approach to produce quick and realistic maps that take traffic information and emissions into account when monitoring air quality in real time.

The objective of this work is to cartography the lead pollution from road traffic by using lichen transplantation in various sites of Tiaret city (Algeria). In this city, the main contribution of lead pollution is by atmospheric way, mainly from road traffic. Lead emissions are under fine particulate form; particules are then collected by the thalli of lichen Xanthoria parietina.46 samples of Xanthoria parietina were transplanted in the city during one month; concentrations of lead are expressed in weight for dry samples of Xanthoria parietina thalli.Cluster analysis has made it possible to define contamination by using three classes of concentration: from 76.31 ± 3.66 ppm to 208.30 ± 38.95 ppm. Recorded values exceed the reference values of Xanthoria (28.35 ± 0.59 ppm). It has also been noticed that high lead concentrations are observed in the vicinities of the main road traffic places. The cartography has been made by using the interpolation/extrapolation method of lead measurements in a limited number of places. The map presents information coming from the Cluster Analysis and the three contamination classes are indicated by a color scale. Such a map can be used to improve spatialized knowledge of the atmospheric pollution problem in urban environment.
