This study considers the impact of adding a proportion of 15% ETBE (Ethyltertiabutylether) to gasoline consumed by vehicles using an underground parking garage in Paris. Sampling site is one floor whom have 14 allocations. Twelve vehicles have been shared in the experiment; all are recent funch made light-duty gasoline vehicles with three-way catalyst. Two measurements were taken in the garage. Firstly between the 9th and 20th April 1996 for vehicles fuelled by leadfree petrol, and secondly between the 22nd April and the 8th May 1996 for the same vehicles using fuel including a 15% proportion of ETBE.The fallowing pollutants were measured in the car park's atmosphere:- Carbon monoxide CO;- Nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide NO, NO2;- Sulfur dioxide SO2;- Black smoke index;- Monocyclic aromatic hydro carbons MAH (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes and 1,2,4 trimethylbenzene);- Aldehydes (Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde). The exploitations of data series obtained for polluants are made by linking values to the number of vehicles moving in the floor of the parking garage. Comparison between both data series for each polluant are managed by analysis with statical tests of means and, more appropriate, medians. In order to show these comparisons, we draw for each polluant quantile-quantile graph where the quantile values are plotted as pairs. From the results of two measuring tests, we can conclude that the addition of 15% ETBE to the petrol resulted in the following changes to the composition of the atmosphere in the car park:- a reduction in CO of about 10%;- a reduction in the black smoke index of between 30% and40%;- no significant change in the atmospheric content of SO2, NO and MAH;- an increase in the content of formaldehyde of between 10% and 25% and of acetaldehyde of between 60% and 90%.The overaIl results would appear to be positive for regulated pollutants and the main indicators of automotive pollution. However the high increase in the acetaldehyde air content should be considered, not only with respect to sanitary implications but also regarding its contribution to photochemical mechanisms in the ambient air.
