Nitrogen dioxide NO2 observation over Toulouse urban centre, by the Midi-Pyrénées Air Regional Observatory began in the early eighties, especially near motor vehicles traffic, but also near the southern industrial area (GP SA).In order to appreciate the general pollution cartography, ORAMIP carried out a first NO2 measurements campaign, from summer 1991 to winter 1991-92, with more than a hundred passive diffusion measurement tubes located every 1,5 km2 over the urban agglomeration. This first toulousian atmosphere nitrogen dioxide pollution inventory showed three sensitive zones in southern Toulouse and especially the southern chemical pole. The toulousian urban scheme strongly evolved over the last five years, inevitably leading to changes in nitrogen dioxide distribution: GP SA industrial smokes "depollution" process since the end of 1992 (about 6 to 2 Tuns/day), great Langlade cross-road improvement leading to an urban highway, coming out of catalytic exhaust-tanks (January 1993), first subway service (June 1993). (Notice: no significant incidence on the nitrogen dioxide amounts of the household refuses Mirail incinerator washing smokes process).ORAMIP realised a new nitrogen dioxide pollution campaign, a "first second time" allowing a five years gap comparison, using the same locations, over the same periods (summer and winter). The new cartography shows a real modification. However, this evolution is not due to different meteorological conditions from a campaign to another. For the whole measurements, totality of the locations, NO2 amounts decreased by an average 15%, particularly in the southern chemical zone sites (24 sites), which showed a decrease over 35%. The site by site comparison (i.e. between 128 "identical" sites) shows a decrease in NO2 amounts for 70% of them, especially due to the industrial "depollution", but also due to buses and subway attendance, catalytic exhaust-tanks use, and urban highway-making. An increase in NO2 amounts is also shown off for 30% of the sites, due to the increase in motor vehicles displacements. We have shown from now, that over the Toulouse urban area, the nitrogen dioxide atmospheric amounts are due to the motor vehicle emissions more than ta the industrial emissions. ORAMIP will carry out this work again in about five years, in order to appreciate the evolution in air quality in the Toulouse area.
