For several years, combined chlorine in water, trichloramine equivalent in air, THMs (chloroform, dichlorobromomethane, dibromochloromethane and bromoform) both in water and air, have been regularly measured in indoor swimming pools in Paris, France. Air samples were collected during two hours. pH, water and air temperatures, relative humidity, and the number of bathers were noted for each sample. The relative humidity was used to obtain the interior air mix ratio (R ratio) in g of water/kg of dry air. The mean number of bathers during sampling was divided by the volume of the pool in order to obtain a v/w ratio. The arithmetic means (AM±95%CIs) of combined chlorine in water and trichloramine in air were 0.242±0.04 mg/L and 182.83±7.78 µg/m3, respectively. The arithmetic means (AM±95%CIs) of total THMs (TTHMs) in water and in air were 26.31±2.06 µg/L and 60.85±6.34 µg/m3, respectively. Significant positive correlations were observed between combined chlorine and trichloramine, between trichloramine and TTHMs in air, and between TTHMs in air and in water. Significant negative correlations were observed between combined chlorine and TTHMs in air and in water. The v/w ratio had a significant influence on TTHMs levels in air and water and on trichloramine levels. pH had a significant but weak influence on the combined chlorine levels. The R ratio was positively and significantly correlated to trichloramine and to TTHMs in air and in water. In a second time, the means of the different chlorination by-products concentrations were compared in regard to the different disinfection methods used: chlorine+UV dechlorination, chlorine+ozone, chlorine+charcoal (filtration or injection), versus simple chlorine disinfection. Swimming pools using UV dechlorination showed significant lower concentrations of combined chlorine and bromoform in air and water, but significantly higher concentrations of chloroform, dichlorobromomethane and TTHMs both in air and water. Swimming pools adding ozone showed significantly lower concentrations of trichloramine, dichlorobromomethane both in water and air and dibromochloromethane in water. Swimming pools using charcoal filtration or injection showed significantly lower concentrations of combined chlorine, trichloramine, chloroform in both water and air and TTHMs in both water and air.
