The study of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) in Algiers atmosphere was carried out both by adsorption of these compounds through charcoal traps followed by the carbon disulfide extraction and by the solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Air samples were collected at room temperature on two stage traps consisting of glass tubes filled with 100 and 50 mg of charcoal by means of a high precision portable air sampling pump at a flow rate of 1l/min during 8 hours. The both charcoal layers were extracted during 30 min with 1ml of carbon disulfide. The sampling of MAHs by SPME was carried out after that the 100 m film thickness polydimethyl siloxane coated fiber was conditioned. The technique was used for the extraction of MAHs by direct exposure of the SPME fiber to the exhaust gas of petrol vehicles during 20 minutes. The qualitative analysis by high resolution gas chromatography with a -cyclodextrin capillary column allowed the identification of 8 hydrocarbons ranging from benzene to n-propylbenzene. Twenty-two mono, di, tri and tetrasubstituted benzene hydrocarbons were identified by the GC-MS technique. The semi quantitative evaluation shows that the MAHs are the most abundant compounds in the urban atmosphere of Algiers. Among them, toluene was found as the predominant one with 40,55%. Benzene, meta-xylene and n-propylbenzene (respectively 10,89, 13,88 and 11,43%) were also important. The application of the SPME in the sampling and the extraction of the MAHs provided satisfactory results. In particular, this technique was found well effective in adsorption and desorption of analytes, inexpensive, portable, solventless and also gave an interesting gain of time consuming. These studies show that the road traffic is the dominant source of MAHs emissions in the Algiers urban area. Finally, these results highlight the need to an intensive control of these MAHs pollutants present in the ambient air of Algiers.
