Ma gli schiavi cantano

The history of theater testifies how a special power lurks in the choir: it can help those slaves who have lost it as a result of their condition of radical subjugation and the violence to which they have been subjected to find a new entry into the language. The essay tries to construct the hypothesis of this minor and so to speak karst connection between ancient Greek theater and the songs of the slaves, as they are inserted in a mainstream film based on a true story, 12 Years a Slave, by British director Steve McQueen.

How does the home become a site of resistance? Starting from this radical question, the article explores and investigates women's everyday practices and tactics of resistance in the domestic space. Through the works and life experiences of black feminists and migrant women, the contribution aims to investigate the political nature of the domestic place and to reverse the traditional perspective through which the domestic has been predominantly recognised as a category of oppression and segregation.

L’immagine (non più) mancante?

The essay develops a double reflection on forms of representation: on the one hand, on the use of images by the Black Panthers Party; and, on the other, on the impact that the BPP has had in the contemporary visual imagination. The essay analyses forms according to a perspective of an internal gaze and of an external gaze, in which the party emerges as a political novelty to be interpreted. But it is the contemporary scenario that takes up the image of the BPP to be explored as a missing image.

Jamais fatiguée : les représentations de Rosa Parks et le récit national étatsunien

The dominant narrative about Rosa Parks’ action in 1955 is more of a morality tale than factual. This ambiguous memorialization is indicative both of the political context of the 1950s, but also of the distortions around the history of the civil rights movement that persist to this day. This article sheds light on the way Rosa Parks was presented, including during the events themselves, by analyzing some of the best-known photographs. The political context imposed narrow limits on protest, particularly with regard to African-American women.

On the representation of body and space in the eulogies for Rosa Parks

Debunking the stereotype of Rosa Parks as a simple seamstress who unwittingly unleashed the start to the Civil Rights movement, this paper explores some eulogies delivered at her funeral to see how the almost mythological narrative about her merges with the narrative of her as a real person embodying the oxymoron of physical smallness and iconic greatness. The negotiation for social recognition that Parks’ example sparked in 1955 is presented in terms of the representation of space in the eulogies.

L’ethos del senso comune

Rosa Park’s gesture speaks to our exhausted abstentions as an echo of Bartleby’s famous “I’d prefer not to”. Observing its persistence, I suggest that decoloniality implies the deconstruction of our incorporated relationship with time, bodies, sickness, the common good. Moving away from the rhetoric of discursive celebration, dialectics at a standstill help us recognize how the right to mourning and the possibility of equality are deeply entangled in order to explore new cartographies of desire within the ruins.

“What’s in a name?” (Re)-Languaging Rosa Parks

By taking as its starting point Sojouner Truth’s speech, “Ain’t I women” (1851), commonly recognized as the funding anti-slavery female speech, the paper investigates the sedimentation of some linguistic features in Truth speech and in Rosa Parks autobiography. In particular, the looks at the role played by language in the framework of the intersectional approach (Crenshaw, 1989) which is acknowledged for its potential to map hierarchies of power and priviledge.

A black Spinoza – notes sur l’autobiographie de Malcolm X

This article is about the paradoxical relationship of Malcolm X to Western philosophy. Throughout his Autobiography, Malcolm appears not only as an activist, as a revolutionary or revolutionist, but as some sort of a street (plebeian) philosopher assiduous in problematizing his own trajectory, his experience, his ordeals and his metamorphosis – a typically philosophical gesture. He refers to the Western philosophy he has become familiar with in prison, but he has to reinvent it completely so that he can make it its own, part of his « dream ». Therefore, he fantasizes about an « Oriental Socrates », a « Black Spinoza ». Philosophy is made of many more things than just academics, books and seminars. This is what Malcolm’s appropriation/hybridization of Western philosophy shows.

Diviser pour mieux régner

This paper focuses on the distinction made by Walter Benjamin between the gures of “the winner” and “the vanquished”. What does this distinction imply in practical and political terms? In this respect, the case of Mayotte's relationship to the other islands of the archipelago seems to us quite eye-opening in that today, a deepening rift divides the Mahorans who claim a fantasized “mahorité” – a postcolonial and traditional culture centered around the Mahoran community – and the inhabitants of the Comoros. This division can only play into the hands of neo-colonialists.

L’icona e la redenzione

Starting from music video by The Carters performing Apeshit, where the two Afro-Americans artists celebrate their socioeconomic success, becoming icons that represent the redemption of black people, this paper tries to reflect on the relationship between icon and redemption in capitalistic socioeconomic system - relationship that develops from Christology’s “economic of salvation” and the historical domain of whiteness.

Do the Right Movies

This essay examines how the films of Spike Lee dismantle certain stereotypes related to black people, demonstrating that an alternative thought and identity may represent an enrichment for the majority, and not just a source of fear or derision. I will consider Lee’s Girl 6 (1996), Bamboozled (2000) and BlaKkKlansman (2018). The aforementioned movies have been particularly effective in overturning the rhetorical mechanisms linked to the Savage, Coon and Victim models in American entertainment.

Riscrivere le proprie storie

Watchmen (2019), created by Lindelof, is built on the personal and family history of Angela Abar (Regina King). The protagonist’s personal events trace the history of the United States. On one hand the tv show places historical facts side by side with surreal cataclysms, on the other it gives a form to the collective feeling of injustice and invisibility at the origin of recent movements such as Black Lives Matter. This essay will focus on the journey of the protagonist as a journey through the racist history of the USA and on the destituent operations that the series carries out in relation to gender and bodies, founding myths and institutions.
