In Hans Blumenberg's investigation of the Lucretian metaphor of the shipwreck with a spectator, a reflection on the sublime is absent. Through a rereading of Leopardi's The Infinite in the light of this metaphor, we want to show that the feeling of the sublime necessarily enters into the consideration of life as a shipwreck. This perspective brings us back to the anthropological turning point of the late Blumenberg in the passage from the notion of "absolute metaphor" to that of "metaphor of existence".
