Il sublime e il mostruoso

The contribution considers the beauty of Helen under the category of the sublime. This perspective allows us to consider that there is an impossible foundation to the Trojan War, a void that reveals that perhaps even in the Iliad a reason for war is missing. Euripides, in the tragedy Helen, radicalizes this trait, taking Helen to the realm of the dead, for a radical destruction-regeneration of her image.

Qu’est-ce qu’un nuage ? Hélène et la matière des rêves

What is a cloud ? In Euripides’Helen, the heroin switched roles with a Helen-like cloud. This supernatural creature being carved out of a cloud has long been overlooked, as if the « cloud » were a mere synonymous for « simulacrum ». We suggest to pay attention to this vivid metaphor whose genealogy brings us back to Homer and reflects the rise of philosophical thought : clouds may be the hidden bond between being and non-being, the primary material of fiction — such stuff as dreams are made on.

Il fiore della libertà: la Teichoscopia di Elena tra Omero e Ghiannis Ritsos

The Teichoscopia, an episode from Book III of the Iliad, is the first time Helen’s voice is heard in the poem. Homer gives the character the ability to recount the deeds of the heroes and their profiles: in this way, Helen’s voice aligns with a specific perspective, one that also blends with Homer’s point of view. In The Fourth Dimension, Ghiannis Ritsos revisits this episode within his mythopoesis, but he alters its meaning. Ritsos transforms the Teichoscopia, in Helen’s final day of life, into a quest for freedom that the now elderly woman ultimately achieves through death. In my paper, I analyze the reinterpretation and the explicit differences between Homer and Ritsos in the poetic construction of the Teichoscopia.

Le ragioni di Elena in Hélène après la chute di Simon Abkarian

The article proposes a reflection on the mythical figure of Helen, paying particular attention to the interior dimension of the character, often placed in the background compared to the radiant beauty that characterizes her. In this sense, Simon Abkarian’s play Hélène après la chute (2023) seems to mark a turning point, bringing on stage a self-aware and determined queen, capable of standing up to her husband Menelaus and of opposing her own reasons and rejecting the yoke of unhappiness.

L’apparenza di niente

The paper aims to investigate Helen’s apparition in Goethe’s Faust II, through Walter Benjamin’s Goethes Wahlverwandtschafen, essay written between 1921 and 1923, in which Benjamin reads Goethe’s novel Die Wahlverwandtschafen. In his essay, Benjamin focuses on Ottilie, whose beauty, in Goethe’s novel, represents an innovation in front of epic and mythological narration. Comparing Ottilie “apparent beauty” to that of Helen in Faust, an incredible closeness between Goethe and Euripides is revealed, insofar as apparent beauty is a sort of mythological fundamental of all wars.

Point de substance – L’ombre d’Hélène dans Le Docteur Faust et autres œuvres contemporaines

Christopher Marlowe in this play, unlike other contemporary texts, seeks to lend prestige to the antique but very ambiguous figure of heavenly Helen, that still haunts the collective imagination of Elizabethan society. This essay aims to examine how Dr Faustus combines the urge for conquest with the keen desire to ravish Helen of Troy, whose unrivalled beauty caused the destruction of the city. The seductive power of the demonic presence conjured by Faustus’s magic powers is overwhelming.
