L’effetto Majorana

A Majorana particle is an elementary particle that coincides with its own antiparticle. Such an entity-assuming it actually exists-represents something unimaginable: it is something that exists, but exists without existing. In this paper we propose to consider the figure of Ettore Majorana as the signifier of this unthinkable form of life that radically escapes the grasp of power devices not by opposing them, but by radically refusing to participate in their game, a game that requires the subject to be free precisely in order to be legitimized to control it, that is, to take away that freedom.

Fuorviare, il caso singolare

The essay explores how Ettore Majorana’s disappearance serves as a productive blind spot for destituent thought. Treating absence as an irreducible event, the analysis shows that every discursive attempt to fill the void fails. Yet it is precisely this failure that opens space for a politics of subtraction, in which power is suspended, and the subject’s voice is redefined within the possibility of not speaking.

Les guerres qui viennent seront formidablement « intelligentes »

This essay by Alain Brossat analyses the way in which artificial intelligence (AI) is already part of a logic of structural warfare. Far from being a neutral tool, AI is being mobilised from the outset by state and private powers in an arms race in which technological innovation is becoming a vector of conflict. The author shows that this dynamic reproduces the accelerationist pattern of capitalism, where innovation escapes any real regulation. He highlights the trivialisation of violence by so-called ‘intelligent’ technologies, which distance operators from the concrete effects of their actions. He denounces the dilution of human responsibility in a context of automated and derealised warfare. Far from bringing security or progress, military AI increases the risk of escalation and uncontrolled operations. The author also criticises the dominant engineering ideology, based on efficiency alone, to the detriment of any ethical or political reflection. He deconstructs the illusion of an AI “revolution”, preferring to see it as an extension of techno-capitalist power. Finally, he calls for a radical rethink of the links between science, technology and violence in the age of AI.

Majorana et nous. La désertion de la science et le communisme

This essay picks up the thread of an ancient, Brechtian discourse on the relationship between science and politics, seeking to revitalize the question of communism. Communism is the social system in which the development of productive forces is such that everyone can become wise. After the Hiroshima bomb, under the Gaza bombs, how do we fight, here and now, for this ancient revolution? If we recognize in science, in its inseparability from technique, in its usefulness, the engine of production (and destruction) of the order of domination today, we must, with Majorana, desert this world.

Majorana/Agamben

The paper aims to investigate the critique of physics and modern science, and in particular the notion of probability, and the relationship between possibility and reality, through Giorgio Agamben’s book on disappearance of Ettore Majorana. Although Agamben does not believe that Majorana decided to disappear in order not to participate in the landing of Fermi and his collaborators on the atomic bomb, as thinks Leonardo Sciascia, this contribution tries to show how, in fact, the figure of Majorana is crucial in Agamben’s considerations of the status of technology and science today, thus, above all, for his reflections around the atomic bomb and the self-destruction of humanity.

Una storia semplice.

By focusing on Gianni Amelio’s film I ragazzi di via Panisperna, this paper aims to show the exemplary character of the disappearance of Ettore Majorana starting from the interpretations by Leonardo Sciascia and Giorgio Agamben. Starting from the idea of “simplicity” as an aesthetical answer to the question raised by Majorana’s story, the analysis will attempt to highlight the main filmic strategies employed to represent the life of the young scientist and its consequences for a theory of biographical narrative.

Far vedere l’invisibile

Unlike Ettore Majorana, who chose silence and self-exclusion, Oppenheimer not only did not “refuse science” (Sciascia), but became a public witness to the emergence of a new role for the modern scientist. He chose to make himself visible, consistent with the experience of having seen something no one before him had even imagined. In Christopher Nolan’s hands, the journey that led to the creation of the first atomic bomb is portrayed as the progressive attainment of a secret vision of the world – not only by the scientist, but by cinema itself.

Per una filosofia antidialettica della corporeità: Sebastiano Timpanaro a Hiroshima

Timpanaro insistently opposed materialism to dialectics, which he understood as a form of resignation to the negative. The importance that the eighteenth-century materialists and the philosophy of Giacomo Leopardi would have assumed in this sense is well known, but may be the experience of the atomic bomb and the comparison with Dario Paccino, through which Timpanaro will come to intuit that materialism does not place a limit only on dialectics, but also on science.

Fare, non fare, disfare: Bruno Latour e la scienza della sparizione

The article explores the crisis of the mechanistic conception of reality induced by quantum mechanics through the thought of Bruno Latour. The first part analyses the ‘disappearing’ mechanism of scientists’ “making” at the basis of modern epistemology and Nature. The second proposes the experiment as an ‘event’, showing the agency of scientists (and others). Starting from this reappearance of acting, we question Ettore Majorana's disappearing act and the unprecedented efficacy offered to desertion.

L’ultima immagine

In Pier Paolo Pasolini’s La rabbia, images of the atomic bomb appear three times. The essay questions the significance of these three occurrences in Pasolini’s editing work, starting with archive images from a “Mondo Libero” newsreel, which had ended its activity a few years before the film was made. The hypothesis is that the atomic bomb represents for Pasolini a confirmation of the opposition between history and myth and that it is an opportunity to experiment with a new cinematic form.
