Il cane in Kafka, tra addomesticamento e diserzione

This article, starting from Konrad Lorenz’s thesis that links human being and dog inside the common destiny of domestication, dwells on the figure of the dog in Kafka. The dog appears to be an ambiguous figure, on the border between animal and humanity, characterized by shame, dependence and submission, but, in its silence and in its strength of instincts, it is also able to practice desertion from and resistance towards human domestication.

Lettere di sfida all’Altro

Letters are always written for the Other. More specifically, they are addressed to the inconsistency of the big Other, as a protest against its powerlessness. The childish complaint aimed to the Other’s evanescence, in accord with Lacanian psychoanalysis, can be understood in terms of perversion, particularly in its masochistic variant. When Kafka blames his own father for having used rude educational means, he actually blames him for not being powerful enough: according to Slavoj Žižek, this can be ascribed to a perverse strategy which tries to restore the Other’s power in order to reanimate the Self.

Davanti alla letteratura, fuori dalla morte

This essay, titled Before the literature, outside the death, aims to examine the relation between writing and death in Blanchot’s thought. Through the analysis of Kafka’s novels, tales, diaries and letters, Blanchot gains a peculiar conception of the figure of the writer. Kafka becomes the paradigm of this interpretation, which leads to discover the revolutionary power of literature by redefining both the idea of death and the notion of writing.

Lynch con Kafka

There is a scene in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) where a picture of Franz Kafka is shown hanging on a wall. Moreover, a long part of this “chaosmic” 18 hours long drama series takes place in a labyrinthic company insurance office. Sliding from one world into another, undecidableness between dream and reality, presence of threshold guardians are recurring themes in Lynch’s production as well as Kafkaesque topics. This convergence can be profitably investigated in Twin Peaks: The Return.

Échapper au territoire de l'homme

The quests pursued by Kafka's narrators are true investigations in which they engage with their whole body. In "Investigations of a Dog" or "The Burrow", we follow, from the inside, mutations as much behavioural as psychological and reflexive, generated by the relation to a fantasized otherness. In the same movement, Kafka also seems to describe, from the outside, a humanity whose moral foundations are shaking and whose specificity is becoming more and more uncertain. Precisely, provoking this disorder is also the aim of the Russian artist Oleg Kulik, who, by adopting the point of view of a dog offers the image of a strange and yet familiar bestiality to an unsettled public.

“Das eigentlich Komische ist freilich das Minutiöse”

When Kafka, among his annotations for The Castle, inserts the sentence “But the real comic lies in the particular”, he gives us a precious indication about the mechanism of his writing. The extreme attention to narrative detail, which characterizes his style, is also a gimmick for him to give a comic tone to his poetic visions. Paying attention to Kafka’s comic side, this contribution aims to focus an aspect that some of his contemporaries had already highlighted, but that has only recently begun to raise a perceivable interest in the German studies.
