This paper tries to think together Bruno and Caravaggio starting from two images: Caravaggio’s Flagellation of Christ, created for the Church of San Domenico Maggiore, and Bruno’s image of Acton metamorphosis from De gli eroici furori. The two images, through the motif of the shadow, present a body’s metamorphosis, that is sign of an ethical and political transformation.

Why does Gregor Samsa’s metamorphosis, while generating lots of disorders within his family environment, not increase his agency? Why does he suffer this transformation? Canetti’s anthropological approach of the metamorphosis, particularly about metamorphoses into insect, could be valuable to formulate an answer to this issue.
