Le ragioni di Elena in Hélène après la chute di Simon Abkarian

The article proposes a reflection on the mythical figure of Helen, paying particular attention to the interior dimension of the character, often placed in the background compared to the radiant beauty that characterizes her. In this sense, Simon Abkarian’s play Hélène après la chute (2023) seems to mark a turning point, bringing on stage a self-aware and determined queen, capable of standing up to her husband Menelaus and of opposing her own reasons and rejecting the yoke of unhappiness.

La prima donna Marilyn

This essay tries to explore the ways opera invents personae of Marilyn Monroe. Actually, the star can be regarded as an equivalent of a prima donna of the 19th century or a lyrical heroine. Despite its mythical tendencies opera could offer destituent processes able to deconstruct all the narratives explaining Monroe’s death and to make it not a defeat but an irreducible event. Besides opera singing will be considered as the expressive form of the impossible identity. Contemporary productions, Ferrero’s Marilyn and de Raaff’s Waiting for Miss Monroe, as well as Warlikowski’s staging of Janáček’s Věc Makropulos will be here analyzed.

Le coup de la « petite moustache rognée »

If Charlie is not only a myth but a living myth, then we have to reckon that, as such, he still overhangs and haunts us to such an extent that we repeatedly fail in making of him just an object of research, inert, available, docile. Even his short cut moustache is still alive, as an emblem of what Adorno calls damaged life. As a tramp (indefinite, undefined) rather than the tramp (a symbol or an allegory), Charlie has become the quintessential underdog, the plebs of the world, relentlessly ill-treated but obstinately resilient. He saves us from resignation, submissiveness and despair.

Médée, où est ta victoire ?

This article is about the status of myths in contemporary Western societies, on how myths have withered and degraded into stories and shows; how the sublime monster of the myth has become either a pallid criminal or a feminist heroine, that is a character that belongs to the chronicle of the darkest of current events. Medea has lost her panache – she has become an infamous woman – in reference to Foucault’s “infamous men”.

Médée, la guerre ou le vagabondage parmi les étoiles ?

This article attempts to wrest Medea from a reading focused only on the tragic. Medea is the “historical” name of a woman who suffers all the consequences of war. What to do in this torment? Medea either suffers her condition or turns into a lioness (Euripides, Mishima) and goes off to war. Her war is, however, like all ‘wars of the poor’, a war of liberation (Pasolini, Olavo). Medea also suggests the possibility of a definitive exit from the world of war created by patriarchy and imperialism: a permanent wandering on the chariot of the Sun (Giordano Bruno).

La dé-moralisation du féminin comme acte de rédemption dans Notturno di donna con ospiti et Medea per strada

In these two rewritings of the myth, Medea is a housewife, pregnant with her third child, dedicated to home and family and a foreigner who arrived in Italy with the dream of a better future, imprisoned in a prostitution racket by the man she loves and who becomes the father of her twins. For both Medeas, infanticide becomes an extreme act of liberation from society’s control over women through the ethics of care; a way to de-moralize gender and deconstruct the notion of femininity.

Planches de salut : (trans)figurations théâtrales de Marilyn

Marilyn Monroe, an actress on its own, did well on theatre as well. She was indeed the heroin of numerous plays, and was “embodied” by various actresses. What is the point of putting a film star on the boards? Is it to offer her some kind of artistic redemption? What about her charismatic and so well-known body, thus transferred into another one, living, and offered anew to renewed male and female gazes?
