Pour la définition d’une cosmo-politique destituante

A new theorization of the power enables Bruno to think of the infinite: the infinite gives a changing open multiple character to the universe. Bruno brings forward an idea of nature as a continuous production, that makes each form becoming a different one in an everlasting rhythm, which he calls “vicissitude”. How to imagine the human world in this infinite universe, agitated on all sides and in continuous evolution? Thanks to a reform of imagination, Bruno thinks of some “civil” institutions able to take in consideration the temporary and metamorphic status of nature and man. According to us, these institutions appear as a “destituent power”.

Joyce e l’ombra di Bruno

The paper reflects on the relationship between Joyce and Bruno starting from biographical considerations, to take account of their shared concepts of shadowiness and infinity. Bruno’s influence on Joyce is clear in the critical writings, the letters and in his major works, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. It is Ulysses that Bruno actually materializes as a character, as this paper argues, but it will be in Finnegans Wake that some of the teachings of the nolana philosophia will be used by Joyce in his attempt to write down the history of manking from the perspective of linguistic relativity.

La scène infinie de Giordano Bruno

In this paper, we propose to consider how Giordano Bruno's thought of infinity challenges the Renaissance or baroque concept of the theatrum mundi. The universe can not be a theatre. Yet, the theatre dispositive keeps coming back in the philosopher's work, but as a redefined theater, constantly problematizing its limits and the spectatorship. And then, in Il Candelaio, Bruno seems to us to define what would be a theatre of vicissitudes, in a kind of landscape theatre, which resonates with certain contemporary experiments.

L’evasione sulla scena. Joyce, Bruno e la “panteomima” del Tempo

This paper aims at bringing to light the role of Giordano Bruno and coincidentia oppositorum in Finnegans Wake. It discusses a number of issues regarding Bruno’s influence on Joyce, the dialogue sketch of “Muta & Juva”, Ulyssean “parallax” seen as a decentering device, the invention of an infinite language as a consequence of the revolt of the Joycean artifex, and the shadowy presence of Bruno’s Eroici Furori in the textual “dislocutions” of the Wake.

Une philosophie bondage ? Politique du lien chez Giordano Bruno

In this article, I would like to focus on the power and originality of the relationship thinking developed by Giordano Bruno. In order to do so, I will focus on the small treatise "De Vinculis" that he explicitly devotes to this issue. First of all, I will show how original this treatise is by its frontal treatment of the question of the relation - we will then have to wait for the work of Gilbert Simondon to find such a way of ensuring an ontological content to the relation. Next, I will resituate the main contributions of this text in the whole of Bruno's philosophy of nature, indicating that they are very often the most accomplished and synthetic expression of it. Finally, I will follow Bruno's own suggestions (especially on the notion of "philautia") to draw from this philosophy of relationship practical, political and ethical consequences, which will very naturally inscribe Bruno in a materialist tradition ranging from Machiavelli to Spinoza, and even to certain readings of Marx.

This contribution on Giordano Bruno would like to read some texts of the Nolan philosopher such as De umbris ideaurum, Ars memoriae, De magia and De vinculis in genere starting from the opposition between the primacy of analogy and combinatorics, the art of correspondences and digital language, life and structure.

L’infini au cours des siècles

The fascinating history of the concept of infinity is indissolubly associated with the development of religions, philosophies, mathematics and natural sciences. At the time of the first Greek philosophers, the infinity, or áperion, was a negative concept to be avoided in all rigorous statements. Later, Aristotle partially accepted the idea of infinity by distinguishing potential infinity from actual infinity. While the former was acceptable, being represented by a growing sequence with no last element, the latter was regarded as impossible, being idealized with a complete infinite sequence consisting of infinitely many elements. These earlier concepts are the basis of all the following developments that led thinkers like Euclid, Archimedes, Galilei, Cauchy, Dedekind, Cantor, Gödel and many others to clarify the concept of infinity and to reach its modern formulation. We propose here a brief outline of the history of the concept of infinity, with particular emphasis on its mathematical definition and implications.

Furore istituente

In this text Giordano Bruno's philosophy is compared with aristotelian tradition and Thomas Hobbes' thought in a metapolitical perspective. The final part investigates the possibility of defining Bruno's political conception on the basis of the Deleuzian paradigm of institution.

Ambivalenza comica e riflessione etico-politica in Giordano Bruno

The purpose of this paper is re-reading the role played by ethical-politic reflection in Giordano Bruno’s works through the features of comic language. The object of the analysis is the famous Bruno’s comedy Candelaio, considered as a foretaste of the most important tasks of Bruno’s philosophy. The concept of comic is considered, by Freud’s and Bachtin’s point of view, as a language marked by contradiction and ambiguity, such as the new universe described by the philosopher.

Giordano Bruno: quanto può una vita?

Giuliano Montaldo’s Giordano Bruno is a biopic that marks a turn in the history of Italian biographical cinema. This essay analyses this movie in the light of Bruno’s thought, highlighting its relevance for the present “biographical turn” as well as the importance of film theory and practice in the framework of the so-called “Italian Thought”. By considering them as strictly intertwined, the essay aims at underlying the crucial theoretical role played by biopics in the definition of specific key concepts of the present time.

This paper tries to think together Bruno and Caravaggio starting from two images: Caravaggio’s Flagellation of Christ, created for the Church of San Domenico Maggiore, and Bruno’s image of Acton metamorphosis from De gli eroici furori. The two images, through the motif of the shadow, present a body’s metamorphosis, that is sign of an ethical and political transformation.

L’infini de Bruno, la dépense pure de Bataille et l’effondrement selon la collapsologie

This article presents the perception of the universe from the point of view of the Renaissance period as represented by Giordano Bruno’s thought, modern philosophy between the two Great Wars represented by Georges Bataille’s writings and the affirmations of contemporary thought of collapsology by Pablo Servigne and Raphaël Stevens. The infinite universe of Bruno and Bataille’s notion of expenditure form the basis of this article, which presents the idea of collapse based on scientific and philosophical arguments such as exponential growth, management and economy of natural resources.

Face à l’anthropocène : proposition d'un être-au-monde écologique

In this paper, I set out to link the concepts of infinite, potency, matter and universe, as defined by Giordano Bruno in his book On the Infinite, the Universe and the Worlds with the works of Guillaume Lambert, a contemporary playwright. I will try to situate the discussion within the context of the ecological changes going on in today's world, using the concept of Anthropocene. What type of ecological way-of-beings are proposed in Giordano Bruno’s philosophy and Guillaume Lambert's artistic proposals put together?
