La dé-moralisation du féminin comme acte de rédemption dans Notturno di donna con ospiti et Medea per strada

In these two rewritings of the myth, Medea is a housewife, pregnant with her third child, dedicated to home and family and a foreigner who arrived in Italy with the dream of a better future, imprisoned in a prostitution racket by the man she loves and who becomes the father of her twins. For both Medeas, infanticide becomes an extreme act of liberation from society’s control over women through the ethics of care; a way to de-moralize gender and deconstruct the notion of femininity.

Medea o dell’amore

Despite the appearances by which she has often been held captive, the figure of Medea can be read as an expression of absolute love. In particular, what emerges from a reading of Euripides' tragedy is what we might call the unrelenting cruel nature of love. In the frightening gesture with which she gives death to her children, the dismissal of the logic of power is intertwined with a paradoxical expression of love, for which giving death can sometimes represent the only possible gesture of care.
