The scientific positioning of Eugesta is deliberately very broad, as can be seen in the programmatic text posted on the site: “The use of concepts developed in Gender studies has significantly transformed research in classical studies, opening up a new extremely fruitful field of cultural and social analysis. Inasmuch as many ideas and values that have played a major role in the construction of cultural and social identities in later western societies originate in classic Antiquity, the texts and artifacts surviving from the ancient Mediterranean cultures represents an outstandingly fruitful field of application for gendered theoretical perspectives. Inquiries conducted into the relations among women, between women and men, among men, and on modes of constructing what qualifies as “feminine” and “masculine” have shed new light on the distinctive ways that ancient societies and cultures functioned, and are of major relevance for studying the reception of antiquity in Western cultures”.
Eugesta accepts papers dealing with different cultural eras (Egypt, Greece, Middle East, and Rome), belonging to different disciplinary fields: archaeology, economics, history, history of art, history of religion, law, literature, medicine, philosophy, reception of Antiquity… and using different critical approaches: anthropology, cultural history, intertextuality, mythography, narratology, new criticism, new historicism, psychoanalysis, sociology…
This broad scientific positioning, that has no equivalent in peer reviews journals on Gender Studies in Antiquity, is supplemented by three other editorial choices that ensure the distinctive and very unique character of our journal:

Eugesta is the only international electronic journal conceived as a virtual meeting place between North American and European studies on Gender in Antiquity; it aims to provide them a higher level of visibility and to encourage reciprocal readings and productive interrelations among engaged researchers. This objective is facilitated by the choice of Open Access.

Eugesta is the only international electronical journal on Gender Studies in Antiquity promoting multilingualism. Multilingualism is a political and ideological choice consistent with Eugesta’s combined European and American identity: we are convinced that it is essential to defend practice of European languages in the current international research community.

If all perspectives can potentially be accepted, Eugesta is particularly interested in publishing innovative studies reflecting new trends in critics in order to contribute to the intellectual dynamism of Gender Studies in Antiquity.
Eugesta aims at disseminating scientific research on Gender Studies in Antiquity mainly to a national/ international academic audience, but also to a wider public, interested in Gender Studies in Antiquity.
