    Abstracts

    The 2023 conference Susan Glaspell: Past & Present, held at the University of Toulouse–Jean Jaurès (France) on 7th and 8th December, provided an opportunity to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the International Susan Glaspell Society. In a conversation moderated by J. Ellen Gainor, past elected presidents Barbara (Basia) Ozieblo, Martha Carpentier, and Noelia Hernando-Real reflected on the Society’s history, assessed its achievements, and considered future challenges.

    La conférence « Susan Glaspell: Past & Present », qui s’est tenue à l’Université de Toulouse-Jean Jaurès (France) les 7 et 8 décembre 2023, a été l’occasion de célébrer le vingtième anniversaire de l’International Susan Glaspell Society. Au cours d’une conversation animée par J. Ellen Gainor, les anciennes présidentes élues Barbara (Basia) Ozieblo, Martha Carpentier et Noelia Hernando-Real sont revenues sur l’histoire de la Société, évalué ses réalisations et envisagé les défis à venir.

    J. ELLEN GAINOR (JEG): Good morning, everyone. We are truly delighted to have the opportunity to speak with you today via this Zoom session. Emeline Jouve, our president, invited us to gather in order to reflect on the origins of the International Susan Glaspell Society, as we celebrate its twentieth anniversary. It is remarkable to realize that we have been working together for so many years. I am honored to be joined by the first three presidents of the Society: our founding president, Basia Ozieblo (2003–2009); Martha Carpentier, who served as Basia’s vice-president before becoming president from 2009 to 2015 and who returned as our current vice-president in 2021; and Noelia Hernando-Real, who was vice-president from 2009 to 2015 and then president from 2015 to 2021. Gathered here are not only the Society’s collective memory but also its tradition of outstanding leadership.     Martha C. Carpentier is Professor Emerita in modern literature from Seton Hall University, New Jersey, USA. She is co-founder of the International Susan Glaspell Society and has been Vice-President and President of the Society. She is author of The Major Novels of Susan Glaspell, editor of Susan Glaspell: New Directions in Critical Inquiry, co-editor of Disclosing Intertextualities: The Stories, Plays, and Novels of Susan Glaspell, also Her America: “A Jury of Her Peers” and Other Stories by Susan Glaspell and most recently Susan Glaspell’s Trifles and “A Jury of Her Peers”: Centennial Essays, Interviews and Adaptations.

    J. Ellen Gainor

    J. Ellen Gainor is Professor of Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University. She wrote the award-winning studies Shaw’s Daughters: Dramatic and Narrative Constructions of Gender and Susan Glaspell in Context: American Theater, Culture and Politics 1915-48. She is a co-editor of The Norton Anthology of Drama, co-editor of The Complete Plays of Susan Glaspell, and the editor of Githa Sowerby: Three Plays. She also edited the influential essay collection Imperialism and Theatre and co-edited Performing America: Culture Nationalism in American Theater. Most recently she edited Susan Glaspell in Context, and co-edited The Routledge Anthology of Women’s Theatre Theory & Dramatic Criticism, which received the 2024 George Freedley Memorial Award Special Jury Prize from the Theatre Library Association. She is an elected fellow of the College of Fellows of the American Theatre.

    Basia Ozieblo

    Barbara Ozieblo is a happily retired Professor of American Literature whose work centered on Women’ Studies, and more specifically on American women dramatists. She devoted most of her research to the life and work of Susan Glaspell, publishing her biography in the year 2000. She co-founded the International Susan Glaspell Society and was its first president.

    Noelia Hernando-Real

    Noelia Hernando-Real is Associate Professor of Anglo-American Theatre and Drama at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain). She has published extensively on the theatre and fiction of Susan Glaspell. She is the author of Self and Space in the Theater of Susan Glaspell (2011), Voces contra la mediocridad: la Vanguardia teatral de los Provincetown Players (2014), and Rosas en la arena: los relatos de Susan Glaspell (2022). She was President of the International Susan Glaspell Society from 2015 to 2021.
