Susan Glaspell in Spain. A Choral Interview in Three Acts and an Epilogue

    A century later, Susan Glaspell has had her premiere in Spain at a professional theatre. The Teatro Español, a major national theatre, now under the direction of Eduardo Vasco, produced a double bill from October to December 2024. Glaspell’s first full-length drama Bernice (1919) was staged at the Sala Margarita Xirgu, while her first one-act play, Suppressed Desires [Deseos reprimidos], co-written with her husband, George Cram (Jig) Cook, was produced at the Salón de los Balcones-Andrea D’Odorico. On this occasion, I interviewed Eduardo Vasco, artistic director of the Teatro Español, Paula Paz, stage director of Bernice, Ignacio García May, translation of this play, and Josete Corral, stage director and translator of Suppressed Desires. These interviews delve into their motivations, expectations and afterthoughts, which all together prove the legacy, modernity, and universality of Susan Glaspell’s theatre.

    Un siècle plus tard, Susan Glaspell a eu sa première en Espagne dans un théâtre professionnel. Le Teatro Español, grand théâtre national, aujourd’hui dirigé par Eduardo Vasco, a produit un double programme d’octobre à décembre 2024. La première pièce longue de Glaspell, Bernice (1919), a été joué à la Sala Margarita Xirgu, tandis que sa première pièce en un acte, Suppressed Desires [Deseos reprimidos], coécrite avec son mari, George Cram (Jig) Cook, a été produite au Salón de los Balcones-Andrea D'Odorico. À cette occasion, j’ai interviewé Eduardo Vasco, directeur artistique du Teatro Español, Paula Paz, metteur en scène de Bernice, Ignacio García May, traducteur de cette pièce, et Josete Corral, metteur en scène et traducteur de Suppressed Desires. Ces entretiens permettent de découvrir leurs motivations, leurs attentes et leurs réflexions, qui prouvent l’héritage, la modernité et l’universalité du théâtre de Susan Glaspell.

    A common Spanish saying reads, “It is never too late to set things right.” This popular proverb seems fitting to define Glaspell’s premiere in Spain at a professional theatre. Over a hundred years later, Spanish audiences could meet Susan Glaspell on a major national stage. The Teatro Español, now under the direction of Eduardo Vasco, produced a double bill. Glaspell’s first full-length drama Bernice (1919) was staged at the Sala Margarita Xirgu, with a capacity for 100 people between 29th October and 8th December 2024, while her first one-act play, Suppressed Desires [Deseos reprimidos], co-written with her husband, George Cram (Jig) Cook, was produced at the Salón de los Balcones-Andrea D’Odorico in front of 40 patrons between 28th November and 8th December.     Noelia Hernando-Real is Associate Professor of Anglo-American Theatre and Drama at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain). She has published extensively on the theatre and fiction of Susan Glaspell. She is the author of Self and Space in the Theater of Susan Glaspell (2011), Voces contra la mediocridad: la Vanguardia teatral de los Provincetown Players (2014), and Rosas en la arena: los relatos de Susan Glaspell (2022). She was President of the International Susan Glaspell Society from 2015 to 2021.
